Astana - EXPO-2017

 
Universal EXPO exhibitions are events of a global scale, comparable to world forums that attract large number of tourists similar to the most popular sporting events.

EXPOs are held once every five years and are among the largest and most prestigious exhibition events in the world. Internationally Recognized Exhibitions are held for three months. EXPOs attracts millions of tourists. Therefore each country wants to create a unique hall to demonstrate the national identity of its culture and to show its level of economic and technological development to the entire world. As a result the visitors can enjoy both stunning architectural and creative appearance of the halls and exhibits created on the latest scientific achievements - the technologies of the future in the truest sense.

Holding the EXPO is an indicator of the state’s high authority for the world community. The Republic of Kazakhstan being a recognized leader in the Central Asian region, one of the largest countries in the world by its territory size, demonstrating stability of the investment climate, high rates of political and economic development for over 20 years of independence, can be reightfully considered deserving to host EXPO-2017.

The theme of the EXPO held by Kazakhstan is "Energy of the Future". It addresses one of the most urgent and globally important issues of the present, which is thrilling the world community - the sustainable use of energy. Astana will become a place to show the best world developments and trends in this area. Owing to the exhibition, the Republic of 
Kazakhstan while striving to become an innovative country will be powerfully boosted in diversification of its economy, modernization of production facilities and research base, attracting new technologies and investments.

Holding EXPO-2017 will be an additional stimulus for economic and infrastructural development of both the capital and the country as a whole.

Small and medium-scale businesses in the capital and surrounding regions, especially population service sector, hotel business and domestic tourism will have a new strong boost. This event will allow attracting significant private investment for construction of exhibition facilities and infrastructure of the capital.

The exhibition will introduce the world to the multi-national culture, ancient history, art, traditions and hospitality of Kazakhstani people which will increase awareness and attractiveness of Kazakhstan for tourists.

To date, the Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated January 15, 2013 No. 11 has allowed establishing JSC "National Company "Astana EXPO-2017".

The main objectives of JSC "National Company "Astana- EXPO-2017" include:
  • preparation for and holding of the Internationally Recognized Exhibition EXPO-2017 in Astana;
  • operation and use of EXPO-2017 facilities after the Internationally Recognized Exhibition EXPO-2017 is over.
The main task of the National Company will be creation of content of the registration file, designing and construction of infrastructure and facilities at the EXPO-2017 area.

In July 2013 in Astana, the results of the national online voting for the new logo of the Internationally Recognized Exhibition EXPO-2017 were summed up.

By the decision of the State Commission the new logo of the Internationally Recognized Exhibition EXPO-2017 in Astana - "Wind Energy" was approved.

In October 2013, the results of the International architectural competition for the best sketch idea for EXPO-2017 exhibition facility were summed up. The winner was Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture company.

It will be recalled that the total area of the designed site is 173.4 hectares, 25 hectares of which are the exhibition facility, and the area of 148 hectares will be occupied by housing, social and cultural, educational and health care projects, shopping centers, parks and boulevards. Approximate area of the exhibition halls is 118,620 m2, service zone is 95,400 m2 and housing zone is 586,465 m2.

Construction of the EXPO town is planned in Yesil district restricted by Kabanbay Batyr, Hussein ben Talal, Orynbor and Ryskulov streets and avenues.

The symbol of EXPO-2017 will be the Kazakhstan’s hall made in the form of a multi-storeyed sphere with the total area of 24,000 m2. The symbol of the exhibition is located in the center of the exhibition town. It is surrounded by international, theme and corporate halls.

The design advantage is that after the exhibition all of the facilities can be changed, disassembled or restructured for a different function which means that no demolition is required. On the whole, the general layout and buildings were designed using the principles of environmentally friendly, economically and socially sustainable concept. The distinctive architectural appearance of the EXPO-2017 facilities is unique, it has enormous benefits for Kazakhstan, but the crucial point is that the design creates a legacy both for our country and the whole world.

As it was noted by the Chairman of the Board of JSC "NC" Astana EXPO-2017" Mr. Talgat Yermegiyaev: "EXPO-2017 event will be a place where five pillars of the Third Industrial Revolution will be embodied".

According to the design of the architectural competition winners the major part of the energy consumed by EXPO visitors will be generated from renewable sources. And all buildings are power plants that use solar and wind energy.

On June 11, 2014, EXPO-2017 was officially recognized and official ceremony of the BIE flag handover was conducted under the 155th General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE).

As reported earlier, on April 24, 2014 the Kazakhstan delegation successfully defended the EXPO-2017 registration dossier at a regular session of the BIE Executive Committee in Paris. The BIE headquarters is located in Paris and currently 168 countries are BIE members.

In honor of Kazakhstan receiving the flag of the Bureau International des Exhibitions, Astana hosted two grand concerts with the participation of the stars of Kazakh and Russian popular music. That was how the capital celebrated the official recognition of EXPO-2017. It now means that Kazakhstan has the right to invite foreign exhibitors and promote the image of EXPO-2017 in the international arena.

On July 3, 2014, during review of projects of Astana city, the President of RoK N.A. Nazarbayev visited the construction site of “Astana EXPO 2017” Exhibition complex. The heads of the following companies familiarized the President with their projects: “Sembol”, “Mabetex”, “BI-Group”, “Basis-A”, “SAEM”, Mega Management, Astana Innovation, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Akimat of Astana, JSC NC “KTZ”.

“Astana EXPO-2017” will be represented both by exhibition and outside the exhibition zones.

The exhibition zone includes:

  1. Pavilion of Kazakhstan (including exhibition platform)
  2. Energy Hall
  3. Pavilion of the National day
  4. Arts Center
  5. Covered Trade Center
  6. Commercial and service kiosks inside exhibition zone
  7. International pavilions
  8. Commercial and service buildings
  9. Thematic pavilion “Energy for life”
  10. Thematic pavilion “Energy for all”
  11. Trade zone (commercial pavilion)
  12. Corporate pavilion

Outside the exhibition zone:

  1. Congress-center with press-center and EXPO office
  2. Hotel
  3. Organizer’s office (service buildings, police station, fire-fighting service)
  4. Building for preparation of performances and parades
  5. Storage facilities
  6. Underground parking

Construction of Exhibition complex and completion of all works is scheduled for December 2016.

On July 2014, the Eurasian Economic Commission at its 10th meeting amended the list of product categories that may be subject to special customs procedures, and the conditions of their placement under these customs procedures. The main result of this decision will be the overall reduction of the project cost. Another important result will be the simplification of customs procedures and documentation flow for foreign exhibitors.

On August 4, 2014, online voting for the mascot of the International specialized exhibition EXPO-2017 started in Kazakhstan. The qualifying stage of the international contest for the best EXPO-2017 mascot design was held from May 20 to June 20, 2014. More than 80 works were sent to the contest, there were projects submitted by designers from Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Portugal, USA, Germany, Switzerland, UK, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Israel, India, Indonesia, Russia, Kazakhstan and other countries.

Online voting for the mascot of the International specialized exhibition EXPO-2017 in Kazakhstan was finished on August 19, 2014. "Теngri and Bori" mascot won the voting. Recall that the qualifying stage of the international competition for the best design of the exhibition EXPO-2017 mascot was held from May 20 to June 20, 2014. More than 80 works were sent to the competition in total. Designers from Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Portugal, USA, Germany, Switzerland, UK, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Israel, India, Indonesia, Russia, Kazakhstan and other countries presented their projects.

On October 3, 2014 the Chairman of the Board of JSC "National Company "Astana EXPO-2017" Talgat Yermegiyaev met with the Head of the Nation. Kazakhstan's President noted that the National company has a big task, which implementation is monitored by the whole public. In his turn, the Chairman of the Board of JSC "National Company "Astana EXPO-2017" reported that the construction was carried out in accordance with the approved schedule.

- A number of memorandums are planned to be concluded with provincial Akimats before the end of the year which, in particular, will specify a list of the materials necessary for construction. At present, construction materials are already purchased from local companies - T.Yermegiyaev said.

He also noted that the company developed mechanisms to attract alternative funding sources. According to the head of JSC "National Company "Astana EXPO-2017", preliminary amount of direct private investments, including projects of hotels, residential real estate and other facilities construction will exceed 800 million USD.

At the end of the meeting the Head of the Nation assigned a number of specific instructions.

According to the approved plan, all 38 facilities of the EXPO-2017 are to be commissioned by December 2016. International exhibitors will begin preparing their displays in January 2017.

In the period from October 6 to 9, Kazakhstan delegation headed by the Commissioner of the EXPO 2017 - First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Rapil Zhoshybayev visited the Transcaucasia. An important outcome of the visit was that Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia confirmed their participation in the EXPO-2017 in Astana.

On October 21, 2014 the Head of the Nation received the Secretary General of the Bureau of International Expositions Vicente Loscertales. At the meeting they discussed the progress of organization and conduct of the International Exhibition "EXPO-2017". The President noted that these works are carried out in strict accordance with the schedule. In his turn, V. Loscertales noted successful progress of the exhibition project, which is contributed by the national-wide scale and constant support of the President of Kazakhstan.

On October 22 the Meeting with international participants of the EXPO-2017 was held in Astana. This is the first event organized by Kazakhstan after the official recognition of the International Exhibition EXPO 2017 at the 155th session of the BIE General Assembly in Paris.

The two-day forum was attended by the management of the Bureau of International Exhibitions (BIE), EXPO Commissioner Secretariat staff, as well as by more than 200 representatives from 86 countries, invited to participate in the EXPO-2017.

One of the objectives of the Meeting was to assure potential international participants that Kazakhstan has all the necessary administrative and material resources to organize the EXPO-2017. It will be held in compliance with all international requirements to projects of such level", - Chairman of the Board of JSC "NC "Astana EXPO-2017" Talgat Yermegiyaev said.

International participants will meet in Astana annually - before the EXPO-2017

On November 25, 2014 the Chairman of the Board of the National Company "Astana EXPO-2017" Talgat Yermegiyaeva met with the Akim of Astana Adilbek Dzhaksybekov. They discussed cooperation in organization and conduct of the International Exhibition EXPO-2017.

At the end they adopted and signed the corresponding Roadmap, which includes issues concerning the process of construction of the expo center facilities, development of engineering and transport infrastructure, urban and public transport, tourism development.

The program document also identified specific measures to ensure safety and comfortable stay of visitors. A large part of the action plan is aimed at organizing volunteer activities and promoting the EXPO-2017.

On November 28, during two-day visit of the Commissioner of the EXPO-2017 - First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Rapil Zhoshybayev in the Principality of Monaco,

he met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs José Badia, director of the State Agency for Marketing and Tourism Eric Marsani and executive director of "Monaco Inter Expo" Julien Selario.

At the end of the meeting attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to France and concurrently to the Principality of Monaco Nurlan Danenov it was agreed to establish a joint commission between Kazakhstan and Monaco and to begin preparation of the corresponding Agreement, as well as to sign the Agreement on Avoidance of Double Taxation and Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of tourism

By the Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated November 27, 2014 No. 1245 Anuarbek Nurbekovich Mussin was appointed to the position of the Commissioner General of the Republic of Kazakhstan section at the World Exhibition "ExpoMilano 2015".

Recall that the World Exhibition EXPO-2015 will be held in Milan from May 1 to October 31, 2015. The Exhibition will be held at the area of 1.7 million sq.m. The Milan will be visited by 29 million guests.

The Exhibition theme is "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life". EXPO-2015 will be extremely versatile event displaying traditions, creativity and innovation in food. It will reveal many themes that have already been covered here in past, but presented anew against the background of new global opportunities. The basic idea is that everyone on the planet should have access to healthy, safe food in sufficient amount.

On December 11-12, Kazakhstan delegation headed by the Commissioner of the EXPO-2017 - First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Rapil Zhoshybayev visited the Republic of Belarus.

During the visit bilateral meetings were held with the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus M.Rusy, Minister of Foreign Affairs V.Makeyev, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus V.Gussakov and heads of scientific and industrial institutions.

At the end of the meetings, a memorandum of partnership between JSC "NC Astana EXPO-2017" and Republican Union of tourist organizations in Belarus was signed. The document proposes cooperation in development of tourism potential of EXPO in Astana.

On December 26 this year the Commissioner of the EXPO-2017 - First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Rapil Zhoshybayev visited the Republic of Uzbekistan. The visit was a part of the 14th session of the Joint intergovernmental commission on bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Delegations of the two countries headed by the chairman of the Commission, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan B.Sagintayev and First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan R.Azimov took part in the IGC work.

At the end of the meeting the parties agreed to organize Uzbekistan's participation in the EXPO-2017 and develop tourism potential of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the eve of the exhibition in Astana.

In January 2015 in Davos the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov met with heads of several major foreign companies and financial institutions in which investment opportunities of Kazakhstan were presented, including those within the International specialized exhibition EXPO-2017 in Astana.

Karim Massimov also met with the Minister of Economy, Education and Research of the Swiss Confederation Johann Schneider-Ammann.

At the meeting, K.Massimov and J.Schneider-Ammann discussed the state and prospects of the Kazakhstan and Swiss trade and economic cooperation, including increase in trade and strengthening of business ties between the two countries. The parties also discussed the issues of the forthcoming accession of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Recall that K.Massimov is on a working tour to Switzerland, where he participates in the World Economic Forum.

As of February 10 of this year 17 countries confirmed their participation in the EXPO-2017. The negotiation process aiming to attract countries to participate in the International specialized exhibition EXPO-2017 is gaining momentum. 17 countries officially confirmed their participation including the CIS and the European Union countries. The Commissioner of the EXPO-2017 - First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Rapil Zhoshybayev continues visiting the countries where he gives invitations and hold negotiations. This year the Commissioner of the EXPO-2017 has a major task to get confirmation from up to 80 countries to participate in the EXPO. Further visits to Europe, America and Asia countries are planned. This preparatory work is of particular importance, since the EXPO-2017 is planned to be attended by more than 100 countries, by at least 10 international organizations. In addition to attracting international participants, the Commissioner promotes the EXPO-2017 on international events and negotiates with the ministers of tourism, leaders of tourism associations in foreign countries.

February. Holding of the International Exhibition EXPO in 2017 in Astana becomes a truly National project. Many domestic enterprises expressed their intention to participate in the construction and preparation activities. Total amount of the memorandums signed with domestic manufacturers has already reached 59.6 billion tenge.

March. National Company "Astana EXPO-2017" develops a draft Concept of operation and use of the exhibition facilities after the exhibition is finished. In total, 38 facilities will be built for the purpose of the exhibition holding, those include the Science and Technology Park, the Center of Culture and Arts, residential complexes and hotels, trade areas, leisure and sports areas, public zones. Management team of the National Company "Astana EXPO-2017" plans to submit the said draft Concept for consideration of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan in July of the current year.

On March, 18th of the current year, the official reception of Vicente Loscertales, the Secretary General of the Bureau of International Expositions, was held in Astana. During the event, the Secretary General of the BIE highly praised the order and organization at the construction site of the EXPO-2017.

On April, 4th, the Head of State visited the construction site of Astana EXPO-2017 Exhibition Complex. During the visit, the Head of State familiarized himself with the models of the future Exhibition complex, including international and thematic pavilions, as well as entertainment and supporting facilities. Also, Nursultan Nazarbayev examined the detailed project of the exhibition’s central facility - the National Pavilion of Kazakhstan. Following the examination, the President of Kazakhstan held a meeting where he commented on the progress of the construction works. The Head of State particularly noted the schedule compliance, stressing the need to ensure readiness of the complex for commissioning and finishing operations by September of 2016.

On April, 15th of the current year, during the visit of the EXPO-2017 Commissioner, Rapil Zhoshybayev, to the Republic of Lithuania the Chancellor of the Government of the country, Alminas Mačiulis, confirmed the intention of Lithuania to present its exposition at the EXPO-2017 exhibition. Thus, Lithuania became the 22nd country of the world which officially confirmed its participation in the EXPO-2017. In addition to the mentioned above, the list of future participants of the Astana Exhibition includes such countries as Germany, Turkey, Israel, India, France, Russia, China and others. 

On April, 16th, at the Kazakh-Turkish business forum held in Astana, the Head of State, Nursultan Nazarbayev, announced that preparations for the EXPO-2017 will be fully completed in 2016. 

In the report of the "Khabar" Agency on alternative electrical power sources, the Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of JSC "National Company "Astana EXPO-2017"", Murat Eskeldinovich Omarov, announced that for the first time in country's history a 6-storey geothermally heated building will be built in Kazakhstan".

On April 29th, the Head of State, Nursultan Nazarbayev, announced that the high technology infrastructure of the "EXPO-2017" will be used as a basis for creation of the financial center "Astana" of special status.

The EXPO-2017 will take place from 10th of July to 10th of September 2017 in Astana. As many as 100 countries, 10 international organizations as well as the leading businesses in the area of innovation technology will participate in the exhibition.
